Our founder, Rick, has tutored both ways — years of in-person sessions with local families and years online, including with Tutor.com. Both can work well. Here's an honest look at the trade-offs.
Where online tutoring wins
- Convenience. No driving, no waiting in a library lobby. A session can start 5 minutes after dinner.
- Price. Without travel time built in, online sessions usually cost less per hour.
- Choice of tutor. You're not limited to whoever lives nearby — especially important for Calculus, Statistics or test prep.
- Flexible session length. A quick 30-minute session before a quiz is practical online in a way it isn't when someone has to drive over.
- Better tools. A good online whiteboard lets the student and tutor draw, graph, use a calculator and paste a photo of the homework in seconds. Animations can show ideas — like how a parabola moves — that are hard to draw on paper.
Where in-person tutoring wins
- Very young children. Some K–2 students need someone physically next to them to stay focused. (A parent sitting nearby for online sessions often solves this.)
- Kids who struggle with screens. If your child is easily distracted on a computer, in-person can be easier at first.
- Hands-on materials. Physical blocks and manipulatives are useful for the youngest learners.
Does online tutoring actually work?
For most students from about 3rd grade up, yes — what matters far more than the format is the tutor: whether they quickly find what your child is missing, explain it clearly, and keep your child engaged. Live, 1-on-1 online tutoring is very different from pre-recorded videos or apps; your child is working with a real person who adapts in the moment.
How to decide
Try it. A short trial session will tell you within minutes whether your child is comfortable online. At Math Tutor Time, you can explore the whiteboard with no account, and your first 30 minutes of live tutoring are free.
